UFC 129 is scheduled for this Saturday (April 30th 2011) and will be hosted at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada for the very 1st time. Ontario recently sanctioned MMA and UFC 129 is the 1st big MMA event in the province. The event sold-out quickly and UFC announced that UFC 129 is by far the biggest event they’ve promoted. Make sure you tune-in to watch Sean Pierson vs. Jake Ellenberger and Nate Diaz vs. Rory MacDonald on Spike TV before the pay-per-view main card fights begin.

Since winning the Welterweight Championship in 2008 against Matt Sera, George St. Pierre (21-2) has defended his title 5 times against the likes of Fitch, Penn, Alves, Hardy and Koscheck. Jake Shields (26-4-1) could prove to be the toughest opponent St. Pierre has had to fight, but it should be made easier with the support from the 50K+ fans rocking the Rogers Centre.

Shields doesn’t knockout out anyone other than 1 TKO victory back in 2006 and he usually takes the fight to the ground quickly where he has an advantage with incredible wrestling skills. GSP isn’t going to be easy to takedown and if taken down he should be able to work out of it. This is going to be a 5 round fight and the fighter with the best stamina will most likely win the fight and in my opinion that fighter is GSP.  Go with GSP at -450 odds.

Jose Aldo (18-1) is the current Featherweight Champion even though he hasn’t fought in the UFC. This will be his 1st fight and it should be fairly routine for Aldo. His challenger is Mark Hominick (20-8) who is coming off a nice TKO victory over George Roop in the 1st round. Hominick has been talking a ton of trash, which I’m sure most of you have seen by now, but like I said it’s only trash that he’s talking.

Jose has the advantage standing up and on the ground against Hominick and it’d take a miracle fight from Mark to knock-off Aldo. I’m sure Aldo will stand up and throw punches and leg kicks most of the fight unless he gets into trouble, at which point he may take the fight to the ground. Also trains with the best fighters in MMA right now and he’s in another class in the featherweight division in my opinion.  Take Aldo at -500 odds.

Lyoto Machida (16-2) has lost his past two bouts against Jackson and Rua and will need to win this fight against Couture on Saturday to keep his name relevant in the light heavyweight division. Machida has a defensive style of fighting in the cage that has proven to work and I like his chances against the very old, Couture. Machida needs to get out to a quick start in the fight and avoid getting pinned up against the cage by Randy and he’ll be fine.  Take Machida at -350 odds.

I like the underdog Mark Bocek (9-3) to pull out a victory on the ground in this fight. Henderson was a top WEC fighter and former WEC Champion, but this is his first fight in the UFC. Bocek has plenty of experience in the UFC already and I think that’ll come in handy this Saturday. Mark will also get the chance to fight in front of his home crowd, so I expect him to give it everything he’s got. If Bocek can takedown Henderson and keep him there he’ll be able to ground and pound his way to a victory. Bocek is known for submitting opponents, but Henderson is one fighter that I don’t think Mark is going to be able to finish off.  Take Henderson at -145 odds.

The odds in this fight aren’t great, but I’m going to take Jason Brilz (18-3-1) to upset Vladimir Matyushenko (25-5) in the 1st PPV bout at UFC 129. Vladimir is now 40 years old, but he’s shown that he’s still got some gas left in the tank. Brilz is also getting older, but still has a few years on Vladimir. Both fighters are used to long gruelling battles in the cage and this shouldn’t be any different. Brilz looked very impressive in his fight against Nogueira even though he lost that fight and I think he’ll right the ship this weekend against Matyushenko.  Go with the underdog here in Brilz at -105 odds.
