Down County Final preview: Burren v Clonduff
Posted on October 13th, 2011 by Mackenzie Coningham | Tags: Burren, Burren V
Burren will come into the game as heavy favourites after winning the title last year with a one point over Bryansford and with 12 county titles they are the most successful club team in Down football.
Clonduff meanwhile last won a county title back in 2000 and caused a bit of shock when they beat neighbours Kilcoo in the semi final. Clonduff looked to be on their way out when they trailed 1-05 to 0-06 at half time to the 2009 Champions however they recovered to win the game by one point, running out 0-11 to 1-07 winners.
Paul McPolin, Arthur McConville and Jason Brown were instrumental in the comeback scoring crucial points while the Clonduff defence played a massive role as they restricted Kilcoo to just two points.
Clonduff have beaten Castlewellan and Loughlinisland not to mention Kilcoo on their way to final however they will need to step up to mark once more if they are to beat Burren.
Burren meanwhile made their way to a second successive final after beaten Rostrevor in the semi final running out convincing 1-14 to 0-06 point winners thanks in no part to 1-05 from Donal O’Hare.
Burren have already dispatched of Benny Coulter’s club side Mayobridge in the quarter finals with O’Hare again in fine form, scoring 7 points in 1-11 to 1-08 win.
With the likes of Kevin McKernan, Declan Rooney, Anton McArdle and Gerard McCartan all featuring for Down in this year’s All Ireland championship Burren have plenty of experience to drawn upon.
The final promises to be a bitter sweet day for Burren manager Frank Dawson. Dawson was the man in charge of Clonduff when they won their last county championship 11 years ago.
The winners of this clash will face Fermanagh champions Roslea in the quarter-finals of Ulster club SFC.
